Welcome to the John Frum Cargo Cult 👇

For the past few weeks, I’ve made the 5 hour hike to visit the John Frum Cargo Cult every Friday. On Fridays, people from around the island gather in the village of Lamakara to sing through the night.

The history of the John Frum Cargo Cult is a very rich one and I would tell you all about it but a quick google search would do the rich history more justice than I can provide in an Instagram caption.

What I can tell you is that I’ve developed some amazing relationships with the guys in this village. I always arrive to the village around 5:30 so that I can take part in the evening Kava at the village’s Nakamal. The Nakamal is the meeting place where Kava is processed and enjoyed by the men of the village. To prepare Kava, the young boys in the village chew the root and spit the wad into a filter taken from a palm tree, water is then run through the mixture and wrung into a coconut shell which is then given and drunk. Kava in Vanuatu is the strongest in the South Pacific and only two bowls makes my head spin, and I drink Kava most nights these days.

In all my travels, I can confidently say that I am enjoying this place, Tanna Vanuatu, the most. Life is simple here. The food is all locally grown and incredibly clean. The village community here is strong and thriving.

There is so much more I can say about this place but the feeling of peace that washes over me as I sit and listen to the beautiful singing of this community, interspersed with the not so distant explosions from the volcano is an incredible experience I am sure to always remember.
